Hip issues can vary greatly depending on age, medical history, mechanism of injury and location of the pain. They can be of a degenerative nature within the joint, or more related to soft tissues such as gluteal tendons and hip bursae.
Common Pain:
- Pain located laterally on the outside of the hip, at the front of the hip, or the groin area are the most common hip pain presentations.
- Restricted mobility in the hip joint.
- Weakness and loss of muscle condition surrounding the hip – this is highly common in the gluteals.
- Loss of flexibility in the muscles that move the hip joint.
- Poor sitting postures and movement patterns, particularly changes in walking gait.
- Anatomical predisposition to hip pain in the joint.
What Can We Do?
Hands On Physiotherapy:
Our physiotherapists will first and foremost differentiate the type of hip pain or injury with thorough questioning and a physical exam. In some scenarios, there is little benefit to hands on physiotherapy, whilst other injuries will benefit greatly from some of the following, in addition to exercise physiotherapy.
- Soft tissue massage
- Hip joint mobilisation
- Lumbar spine mobilisation
- Dry needling
- Taping
Exercise Based Physiotherapy:
This element of management is highly important in hip injuries, whether they be related to a tendon or muscle issue, or an arthritic joint.
- Exercises to address mobility limitations in hip and lower back.
- Muscle activation of muscles that are weakened, inactive or inhibited. Commonly the gluteals and lower abdominals, along with adductors, hip flexors, quadriceps and hamstrings.
- Identifying and correcting postural and movement maladaptation’s, such as walking, sitting, getting out of a chair or off the floor.
- Progressive strengthening and loading of the hip and surrounding areas.
