Vertigo is a common presentation for our clients at The Physio Rooms Woodvale. Vertigo can be extremely debilitating affecting all aspects of your life from work to hobbies. Vertigo may require a medical diagnosis but there are certain form of vertigo such as BPPV that respond extremely well to physiotherapy.
It is also common that symptoms can masquerade at vertigo when there are other factors at play. Our physiotherapists are trained in recognising when vertigo is not the issue, and referring onwards to make sure you receive the correct treatment and management. We also refer to vestibular/balance and dizziness phyiotherapists when the issue is more complex than BPPV.
Common Symptoms:
- Dizziness and nausea with twisting the head
- Dizziness and nausea with bending forward
- Dizziness and nausea when rolling in bed
What Can We Do?
Hand On Physiotherapy:
Once the cause of your vertigo has been determined there are a number of manual treatment that can make a profound impact on your symptoms.
- Epley’s Maneuvre – a series of movements designed to alleviate the symptoms of BPPV
- Neck mobilisations if there is associated neck stiffness
- Neck and shoulder soft tissue massage if there is associated tightness in these regions
Exercise Based Physiotherapy:
Exercise based physiotherapy will likely be employed to help manage your symptoms in the early and medium-term management of your vertigo. These may include:
- Home Epley’s maneuvre
- Vestibular rehabilitation exercises
- Neck and shoulder range of movement exercises
