Foot and Plantar Fascia Pain

Foot pain can be for a variety of reasons. Common issues include arthritis, fractures, Morton’s neuroma, bursitis and tendinopathy. The most common cause of foot pain seen in clinic is plantar fasciitis, which involves inflammation of the tissue running along the arch of the foot between the heel and ball of the foot. It often becomes inflamed due to repetitive load, stress or impact.

Common Presentation of Plantar Fasciitis:

  • Heel pain
  • Pain worse first thing in the morning or walking after prolonged sitting
  • Aggravated by flat, unsupportive or restrictive footwear
  • Aggravated with no footwear

What Can We Do?

Manual Therapy/Advice:

  • Re-evaluate footwear
  • Modification of contributing activities
  • Massage
  • Foot and heel mobilisation
  • Taping for arch support
  • Orthotic advice

Exercise Based Physiotherapy:

  • Strengthening of plantar fascia and surrounding muscles
  • Evaluate areas of weakness higher in the lower limb that may be contributing – stretching/strengthening as required
