Nerve pain is a common pain associated with an existing injury such as lower back or neck pain. It usually arises due to an injury relating to the spine that has caused a disruption in the behaviour of the nerve. Some common causes of nerve pain can be spinal degeneration, disc injuries, poor posture, and muscle imbalances.
Common Symptoms:
- Altered sensation in the limbs, including numbness, tingling, burning or aching
- Difficulty getting into a comfortable position
- Relief with movement or activity
- Difficulty sleeping
What Can We Do:
Assessment of structures contributing to the cause of the nerve pain is essential, along with addressing habits, behaviours and activities that may be causing the pain. Our physiotherapists also can carry out testing to inform us if you need further investigation or if there is a non-mechanical cause of the nerve pain.
Manual Physiotherapy:
Techniques such as massage, dry needling and mobilisation to address structures and issues that may be contributing to nerve pain in relevant areas.
Exercise Physiotherapy:
- Assessment and postural correction
- Mobility exercises to address stiffness or tight muscles contributing to nerve pain
- Strengthening of weak and dysfunctional muscles impacting the nerve pain
- Prescription of appropriate physical activity to improve chronic nerve pain
