Jaw pain describes pain at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the part of your jaw just in front of your ear. People experience jaw pain for a number of reasons – they can relate to existing neck pain or headaches, clenching or grinding teeth, poor posture, arthritis and/or muscle imbalances.
Common Symptoms:
- Pain at the jaw – usually with chewing, yawning, or opening the jaw wide
- Clicking, grinding or popping
- Restricted movement of the jaw
- Locking up of the jaw
What Can We Do?
Hand On Physiotherapy:
- Assessment of areas and activities that may be contributing to jaw pain
- Massage around the jaw, face, neck, shoulders and thoracic spine
- Mobilisation
- Dry needling
Exercise Based Physiotherapy:
- Strengthening and mobility exercises for the jaw specifically
- Exercises for surrounding areas contributing to jaw dysfunction (neck, shoulders, upper back and posture)
- Advice regarding habits that may be contributing to the jaw pain
